About Us
How Saving Animals Shelter began..............
Living on a farm, over the years many animals have been dropped off at our farm gate by well meaning city-folk. They seem to think by dropping them off in the country the animals are automatically going to find good homes........This is so far from the truth! Only a lucky few find homes. Most get killed by wolves or coyotes. Farmers usually shoot what they perceive to be problem dogs. Some get hit and killed by vehicals. The rest go without water and starve.
When we found them we always took them in. In many cases the animals were in poor health and condition. We would nurse them back to health with the intent of finding them responsible homes when they were ready.
In many cases by the time they were healthy, they had wormed their way into our hearts as well as home, and we couldn't bare to part with them. Then we were given several horses that had been starved out. We nursed them back to health too. Then it was a heifer calf whose mother was bred to young, and the calf was to big. The mother died giving birth and the calf's legs were to bent to stand {from being cramped in the womb}. The owner didn't want to spend the time rehabilitating her limbs and was going to shoot her. We couldn't stand that so at 4 days old we brought her home!
During the day we put her in and out of a sling and messaged her legs. We had a milk cow who had just had her own calf, so we would bring the cow to her so she could nurse. Over time "Buffy" did grow up with straight legs though she did have a hump in her back that we couldn't straighten. She is a very effectionate & loving cow. She can never be bred but her company is well worth the food she eats.....and she does have a job to do. She babysits our milk cows calf!
With not to much thought we decided to not just wait for homeless animals to come our way, but to reach out to them too, so began Saving Animals Shelter.......or effectionately known as SAS
